Standing in stirrups without gripping

What It Does

Shows where the balance base actually is and builds security from below rather than from grip above. A rider who cannot stand in stirrups without gripping the knee is using the wrong part of the leg as a foundation.

What to Feel

Balance possible through the ankle and foot without gripping upward through the knee or inner thigh. The leg under the hip, ankle open, weight dropping.

Common Mistakes

  • Pushing the heels down hard as the only security strategy.
  • Gripping the knee to stop wobbling.
  • Drifting into a rising trot position rather than a clear two-point.
