Foot placement on stirrup (metatarsal pad focus)

What It Does

Gives the correct base of support through the foot and allows the ankle to function as a shock absorber. Too far forward closes the ankle; too far back locks it. The metatarsal pad gives the ankle its full range.

What to Feel

The stirrup under the widest part of the foot. The heel free to drop and the ankle free to absorb. The foot sitting on the stirrup rather than being driven down.

Common Mistakes

  • Riding too far forward on the toe, which closes the ankle.
  • Riding on the arch, which restricts ankle movement and forces the whole leg to compensate.
  • Over-correcting and pushing the foot home — heel behind stirrup — which creates a different lock.
