'Can your leg stay there without holding it?' drill

What It Does

Distinguishes between a stable leg position — which remains when conscious control is released — and a gripped position — which requires continuous effort to maintain. If it falls apart when you stop thinking about it, it is being held, not organised.

What to Feel

The leg remaining in approximately the same place when you consciously let go of managing it. Ease rather than maintenance.

Common Mistakes

  • Only testing this in halt or slow movement where holding patterns often disappear.
  • Thinking the answer must be yes immediately rather than treating it as a progression.
  • Missing when the holding resumes unconsciously — it usually happens at the next transition.
